On January 25, 1860, Charles Curtis was born. His father, Orren, was white, and hismother, Ellen, was a quarter Kaw Indian. Her great grandfather was a Kaw Nation chief whosigned a treaty ceding Kaw tribal land to the United States. Because of that, the Kaw people leftbehind their nomadic ways to become farmers.
